Seriously, send me some pictures.

I want to keep updating this blog with great pictures of women riding their bikes, but I need submissions. Tell your friends and send them to girls.on.bicycles@gmail.com.

Fuck yeah, Kat! Here she is biking on a frozen Powderhorn Lake in Minneapolis in winter 2010. Kat is one of the organizers of the fantastic Grease Rag, an open-shop repair night for Women, Trans, and Femme cyclists that happens five times a month at a variety of locations in Minneapolis.

Fuck yeah, Elizabeth and friends! Here they are on the Girls Gone Grumpy ride in Minneapolis this past November. The ride went to all of the Grumpy’s bar locations around the Twin Cities. Men were welcome to attend, but they had to wear skirts or dresses. Thanks for the sweet photo, Elizabeth!

Send me winter cycling photos!

Do you live in a place with an icky winter climate? Snowy or rainy or cold or icy? Are you female identified and still riding your bike through the nasty weather? Send me a picture of it! girls.on.bicycles@gmail.com

Fuck yeah, Candace and Stefanie! These brilliant twin sisters are each celebrating their 30th birthday today. Candace rides her bike to and fro to roller derby, kayaking, and a myriad of other incredible physical feats in Durango, CO. Stefanie carries her french horn in a bag almost as big as her up and down Seattle’s hills on her way to band practice, social justice organizing, and general badassery.
This photo is from a birthday of theirs featuring unseasonably nice weather and dumpster diving in 2010.

SISTERHOOD IS POWERFUL.

Fuck yeah, Meg! She conquers Seattle’s gnarly hills by bike every day, and makes great art.

A mission statement, of sorts

I started this tumblr a few years ago when I got really obsessed with “fuck yeah!” blogs. I am a woman that loves bikes, and I was surprised that I had a difficult time finding bike photo blogs about women. The ones I did find had many pictures of scantily clad (or just straight up naked) women (who generally appeared to be professional models) with bikes. The women on these blogs are almost exclusively white, very thin, and young. While this certainly represents a portion of female cyclists, it by no means represents all of them. And I also find it really irritating that most of the photos on these blogs are of women in sexualized positions

Because of all this, my goal is to represent a greater diversity of female cyclists, with their real bikes, with none of the photos being primarily intended to demonstrate sexiness (obviously, lots of female cyclists are sexy and some photos are going to be sexier than others, but I don’t want it to be the primary objective). I want this to be a blog women- and, well, everyone- feels inspired by.

So if you are female-identified and ride a bike, send me your photo. Get out there and ride!

Fuck yeah, Caroline! Caroline married her sweetie Paul last summer, and a week later the two took off for a cross-country, fully-loaded bike honeymoon. Here she is in Detroit, about half way through her amazing journey. Caroline plays ukulele in Portland’s classic country ukulele band, Honky Tonk Prison.
